PICTOU – A 21-year-old New Glasgow man who says he is disgusted by his actions was handed six months’ house arrest for spitting in the faces of two police officers.

Dylan Douglas Webber was sentenced Monday in Pictou provincial court on assaulting a police officer and two counts of uttering threats from an incident Nov. 4.

Webber told provincial court judge Del Atwood that he is “disgusted by the things I said,” adding that the police officers who arrested him treated him fairly.

“I am really sorry, I shouldn’t have acted that way,” he said.

Police arrested Webber after they were summoned to a local apartment building for a disturbance call.

The Crown said Webber threatened to kill himself after his girlfriend had told him to leave her home and he became aggressive and agitated when police tried to remove him from the residence.

He told police he had taken 60 pills of clonazepam and was taken to the Aberdeen Hospital where he resisted the officers, called them names and spit in their faces.

Webber also uttered threats to two people while in hospital.

The Crown asked the judge to consider a sentence of 90 to 120 days followed by probation, adding that the threats were serious while spitting in the face of officers is serious offence and health risk.

Defence lawyer Doug Lloy said his client is remorseful for his actions and has the support of his family as well as two victims whom he threatened.

He said his client’s intentions are to find work as soon as possible and support his young family. He came to court with several letters from employers willing to hire him in the concrete trade.

Atwood sentenced Webber to an eight-month conditional sentence order that included six months’ house arrest.

He said it was clear from a psychiatric report that the drugs Webber consumed changed his behaviour over time and now his family and friends are prepared to give him a second chance.

He told Webber that actions speak louder than words so he had better prove that he is willing to put this experience behind him and move on with his life.

“You have been given a green light all the way but it will take a full commitment from you,” he said.
