Creators hope 30-second homemade ad will move win them $1 million

NEW GLASGOW – Brian Affleck, an advertising manager with Velsoft Training Materials, has created and dealt with many different kinds of advertisements over the years.

It’s doubtful he ever thought he’d be putting those skills to use to create a humorous Doritos ad with a few friends here in New Glasgow, but that’s exactly what he did.

PepsiCo’s Doritos is hosting a Crash the Super Bowl contest, where contestants, including Affleck, are hoping to turn their boldest Doritos commercial ideas into homemade advertisements for the chance to win a $1 million grand prize.

Ultimately, two lucky winners will see their ads air in front of a global television audience during Super Bowl XLVIII and win the opportunity to work with Marvel Studios on the set of “Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the sequel to the 2012 blockbuster “Marvel’s The Avengers.

Affleck and his team’s video has been uploaded and is ready to be viewed and rated by people. He said he’s never done anything like this before.

“It’s definitely a low budget to no-budget film,” said Affleck. “Basically, we saw the ad for the contest and thought it would be cool to put something together.

After hours of filming and about 12 hours of editing, Affleck said the project has been a lot of fun.

“The way we look at it, we won’t win a million dollars unless we try.”

The 30-second clip, filmed at Velsoft’s downtown New Glasgow office on Provost Street, captures the tragedy that takes place when one gets to the last Dorito of the bag. And while the video can be viewed on YouTube, Affleck said the trio wanted to have a surprise ending.

“I can say that no Doritos were harmed during the filming.”

It’s safe to say all were, however, eaten.

A qualified panel of judges, including executives from the Doritos brand, advertising professionals and the legendary Stan Lee, chairman emeritus of Marvel Entertainment, will select five finalist ads.

The judges will be marking on originality and creativity, adherence to creative assignment and overall appeal as a Doritos Super Bowl ad. The Super Bowl XLVIII will take place on Feb. 2, 2014.
