Monday, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board released an order granting Heritage Gas permission to expand its natural gas pipeline to Michelin.

New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan is excited about the possibilities as natural gas is being expanded into Pictou County.

Now with the large tire manufacturer and Northern Pulp on board, New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan is optimistic that natural gas could soon be used in homes and smaller businesses in the area.

“It’s great news for New Glasgow and for Pictou County in general,” MacMillan said.

He said getting the contract signed with Michelin Gas is a jewel in the crown for Heritage Gas, as well as a benefit to Michelin.

“It will certainly hasten the development of Natural Gas to New Glasgow and to our bigger users in general,” he said.

MacMillan believes natural gas could be a tremendous benefit to the area. He points to the hospital in Amherst as an example. He said that hospital was able to cut their heating costs in half.

“Just think what that would do for our hospital and to our other users,” he said.
