STELLARTON – A handful of members of the Stellarton Fire Department were in attendance at the Town of Stellarton council meeting on Monday night with two speaking during the open forum portion.

Both spoke on their concerns about the policing decision, which has yet to be made by the town after asking for proposals for policing.

The concerns focused on the fear of the fire department potentially being in jeopardy of staying if the policing was no longer looked after by the town’s own department. Coun. Denise Taylor assured them this was being looked at because of the shift in how policing is being handled throughout the country.

She also added that no decision has been made and regardless of the decision it won’t affect the fire department.

Coun. George Megeney also responded to their request to take part in meetings. At this time the meetings are in camera because they involve personnel, but he invited them to voice their concerns and said they will be welcome at open meetings before the decision is made.

Earlier in the meeting council also passed a motion to undergo an organizational review, which will help identify areas within their staffing as a whole that are strengths and areas they need to improve or put more resources into.

I wonder how the policing decision could possible effect the firefighters? I cant see how it would matter, the police force that would be policing stellarton would not be putting out fires... Excellent work by Coun. George Megeney for allowing the fighters to voice their concerns. I hope town counsel brings in new police that are growing with the times and have reources on hand.
