WESTVILLE – Artist Stephen Robinson has always wanted to do something for the town where he and his family grew up.

He’s used his talents along with a little Christmas spirit to do just that.

Robinson, a quiet, soft-spoken man, is behind the artwork that currently stands in Acadia Park in Westville in Glenn MacLeod’s Christmas Theme Park.

The ten 4x8 panels set up in the park depict winter and holiday scenes from Westville’s past.

According to MacLeod, the Theme Park and artwork have been warmly received.

“It’s turned out really well,” he said. “Everyone’s has been complimentary toward the artwork and Stephen’s designs.”

Robinson, who completed a two-year program in digital animation at NSCC Truro and a four-year bachelor of arts in applied arts animation at Sheraton College in Ontario, has been associated with the Christmas project since last year.

“Glenn gave me a few pictures to start and I tried to find some photos of the train station,” said Robinson. “After that, I went around town taking pictures of the landscapes and churches.”

Artwork for each of the large panels, created by Robinson, took about 10 to 15 hours to make.

“That includes drawing, corrections, and painting,” he said. “Each was done in free hand and then Photoshop was used for colouring.”

Initially, MacLeod had trouble finding an artist for the theme park artwork but a chance encounter in a grocery store led him to Robinson.

“Stephen’s mom, Barb, stopped me and told me she had just the artist for the display,” said MacLeod. “Her son.”

The display, which opened last Friday, will be open to the public until Dec. 28. Robinson hopes that Westville will enjoy his art this holiday season.

“I hope it makes people proud to be from Westville,” he said. “People who stop by will get a chance to see what things were like in town long ago.”

Robinson also created Christmas cards of the artwork on display in Westville that can be ordered by calling 396-3787.

This article makes it look like the artist was the main force. Not so, as I walked, and watched as an army of volunteers, not the artist, spent their Saturdays in freezing temps. to map out, build, and endure driving snow on reveal night, so we ALL could reap the rewards of this project. I am enjoying the walk down memory lane, but don't appreciate the commercial. Kudos to the team who put this together. Looking forward to next year already.
