TRURO – Guidelines for optional French programs in Chignecto-Central Regional School Board are being reviewed.

The CCRSB has been discussing the optional French programs offered throughout the board. Guidelines are being considered, mostly based on enrolment, that would impact which programs continue, class size and promotion of programs.

CCRSB superintendent Gary Clarke told the board this week that “class sizes are pretty good now (but) by taking a look at the (programs) it will allow the board to (control) extreme situations... high or low numbers.”
Scott Milner, director of education services, shared some regional plan possibilities for the board to consider. Some of the ideas being discussed include:

-      Middle immersion should not expand, but could continue.

-      Minimum enrolment to start a class in primary, Grade 4 or 7 is 20.

-      If any late French immersion or integrated (Grade 7 entry) class dips less than 15 students, it will stop.

-      If any early or middle French immersion (Grade primary and 4 entry) goes below 15 students, and a combined class is not possible, the class will stop.

-      Combined classes with a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 25 could be possible.

-      If enrolment is too low to start a class, CCRSB will continue the registration process for two years. The third attempt will be a survey for other optional French programs.

School board member Susan MacQuarrie, who represents the Truro area, said having French options in CCRSB “is awesome” but “I definitely think they need to be streamlined. We are all over the board” without a common regional approach, she said.

Discussion into possible changes dates back to June 2009 when a motion for an external review was called. The review has included hiring a consultant, creating recommendations and options, and now, receiving parent feedback.

The topic will be discussed again at next week’s regular school board meeting.
