NEW GLASGOW – With every Chase the Ace ticket she sells, Tammy MacLaren is thinking of the students who might benefit from the proceeds from it in the future.

A student might join a sports team because they have nice uniforms and good equipment or a student might find a niche playing one of the musicals instruments those tickets paid for.
“These extras might be the hook we need to entice kids to want to go to school,” she said.
So far $1,000 has been raised toward school enhancements for the new Primary to Grade 8 school being built in New Glasgow. But much more is needed if they are to reach their goal of $200,000 in two years.
The enhancements include structural increases to the gym, band room, multicultural meeting room and a mural. Other extras include new sports uniforms, instruments, various art projects throughout the school and a natural playground.
MacLaren is optimistic that this Chase the Ace fundraiser could be a major boost to that end. She got the idea from Noel, a community in Hants County that held a similar fundraiser and ended with a jackpot of more than $200,000.
Chase the Ace is held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Flea Market at the Aberdeen Business Centre and at 12:15 p.m. a winner is drawn. They automatically win 20 per cent of the earnings for the day and if they draw the ace of spades from the deck of cards on the table, they’ll win the other 30 per cent. Each week a card is taken out of the deck, increasing the odds of a winner being picked.
MacLaren said they realize some people can’t or don’t want to go down to the flea market on a Sunday, but suggests that businesses or groups can pool their money together and send one person.
In addition to the Chase the Ace, the school fundraising committee is starting to go around to businesses, service groups and other organizations to ask for support.
Dave Whittemore, co-chair of the committee, said the results so far have been mixed, but for the most part people are supportive of the project.
He said even the items that a person wouldn’t think would be expensive are, such as the playground which will cost in the range of $60,000 to $70,000. Musical instruments will be around $42,000.
He said he’d love to be able to raise above and beyond their goal so that they could pay for the future expenses of uniforms and other school functions so that students wouldn’t have to worry about going out to fundraise door-to-door. But for now, he’ll be content to reach their current goal.
