In what’s been an unusually cold start to winter, the Pictou County Fuel Fund is continuing to support county residents who find themselves in emergency home heating situations.

So far this winter, the number of calls requesting support are higher than last year by about 30 per cent. But Diane Wagg, chair of the fund’s fundraising committee, said things are going well.

“The fuel fund continues to receive tremendous support from the local community,” Wagg said. “As you can imagine, more calls have come in earlier. Donations though, have been coming in steadily as well.”

One group that has made a donation to the fund are the employees of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal as well as the Bergengren Credit Union, whose combined donations equal $4,000.

For the second year in a row, the staff of A.G. Baillie Elementary School has stepped up contributing an amazing $2,050 and more than doubling their level of support from last year’s contribution.

As awareness increases for the fund’s mission the support continues to grow.

The Fuel Fund has introduced new participation guidelines requiring a $100 co-pay from those who have previously participated in the program. This will ensure the fund is positioned to support as many emergency situations as possible as demand increases with declining temperatures.

“We’re pleased that people are organizing events with the people they work with to raise funds for the Fuel Fund,” said Wagg. “Every bit counts.”

This past December, the fund recently launched “The Gift of Warmth” campaign encouraging Pictou County residents to consider making a donation to the fund as an alternative to more traditional gift giving. The idea seemed to strike a chord and is available all year long as a tax deductible gift for any occasion.
