PICTOU – Drug and weapon convictions have added another year to the three year-sentence a 21-year-old Pictou man is currently serving in federal prison. His brother will be sentenced on similar charges in March.

Matthew David William Greencorn pleaded guilty Monday in provincial court in Pictou to trafficking in cannabis, possessing a sawed-off shotgun and breaching a court order. He was originally sent to prison for a home invasion in Westville.

Greencorn’s brother, Travis Alexander Greencorn, 18, pleaded guilty to trafficking in cocaine and possessing a sawed-off shotgun. Other drug and weapons charges against the brothers were dismissed. A pre-sentence report was requested for the younger Greencorn who returns to court for sentencing March 25.

The charges were laid after Pictou County Street Crime Unit exercised a warrant to search a Denoon Street apartment shared by the brothers. The search uncovered cocaine, cannabis, scales, score sheets and other drug paraphernalia, as well as $1,000 cash, the sawed-off shotgun and a variety of ammunition. Two other persons were in the apartment at the time and a charge against one was dropped while the charge against the second was directed to the adult diversion program.

Doug Lloy, defence attorney for Matthew Greencorn, described his client as bright and articulate with lots of potential, adding he has a supportive mother and did not have to resort to anything as dangerous as trafficking drugs.

Judge Del Atwood said Greencorn had employment and an education plan that will be substantially interrupted by the sentences he has received.

“The coupling of drugs and firearms is extremely alarming and frequently plays out to jeopardize community safety,” he said.

He sentenced the older Greencorn to a year on the trafficking charge and another 120 days on the firearms and breach charge but said the time would be served concurrently. The sentence also includes $200 victim surcharges on each of three charges, with five years to pay, and firearms prohibitions.
