NEW GLASGOW ‚Äď This Valentine‚Äôs Day, four groups of approximately six students from the North Nova Education Centre (NNEC) Jazz Choir will spend that Friday afternoon with parent volunteers, delivering singing telegrams within New Glasgow, Trenton, Stellarton and Westville.
The groups will be singing from a choice of two songs this year: Nat King Cole‚Äôs ‚ÄúL-O-V-E‚ÄĚ or The Turtles‚Äô ‚ÄúHappy Together‚ÄĚ. When they show up to deliver the telegram a student hands the recipient a rose, another hands a small box of chocolates, while the group starts singing in harmony. For each recipient the experience is different, whether it‚Äôs coming from a co-worker or a loved one. Some telegrams are sung to people at work, others at home, teachers in their classrooms or lunchrooms, doctors or patients at the hospital and loved one‚Äôs at senior‚Äôs homes. Sometimes the sender likes to remain anonymous, while others proudly profess their love.
While the Jazz Choir has been providing this special event for a number of years under the direction of Janice Alcorn, each year there are new students coming in to the program and gaining the experience.
This is one of their annual FUNdraisers, which supports the music programs at NNEC. The cost of a singing telegram is $30.
