NEW GLASGOW – Families who have lost a loved one to an impaired driver are encouraged to be part of a provincial memorial service this fall.

Winnie MacDonald, president of the Pictou County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, said the emotional annual service at the Dartmouth Memorial Gardens is a time for people to come together and remember their family members while sharing similar emotions with others from across the province.

“We hope the service will be an incentive for people not to drive drunk and it honours the person who was killed because their name can be engraved on the memorial monument in the gardens,” she said.

There is currently one Pictou County name on the memorial monument, she said, adding that there are 52 in total on the monument. The granite monument is one of three in Canada, the others being located in New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

All family members need to do to have a loved one’s name placed on the monument is provide proof that their death was caused by an impaired driver. MacDonald said this is as easy as showing organizers a newspaper clipping or police report with such information on it.

She said anyone is welcome to attend the service and victim service volunteers will be present to provide support services if necessary.

“It is an emotional service and a safe place for families and friends to be so they can reflect on the time they had with their loved ones,” she said.

If you have lost a loved one and wish to have their name memorialized on the monument, or would like more information, please contact Susan MacAskill, Atlantic Chapter Services Manager at 1 866-798-6233 or by email: atlantic@madd.ca. The deadline to submit names is June 27. There is no cost for this service. All that is required is documentation that the death was a result of an impaired driver (i.e., police report; newspaper article).
