NEW GLASGOW - The Town of New Glasgow has just announced that it will fly the rainbow flag for the remainder of the Sochi 2014 Olympics.  Gerard Veldhoven, on behalf of the Pictou County Rainbow Community, made the request to New Glasgow.

Rainbow flag flies high

“We are more than pleased to fly the Rainbow flag during the Olympics as a gesture of support for fostering an inclusive community," said New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan. "We believe in respect and dignity for all and this is an important symbolic gesture and an opportunity to communicate our values as a community.  Equality for all is an essential part of what we stand for as a town and as Canadians.”

Veldhoven believes that the Winter Olympics in Sochi has many concerned, not only about safety issues, but also human rights abuses for members of the gay community.

"Gay athletes, visitors to the games and those supporting equal rights, equal treatment, equal opportunity and equal access are concerned about the future of our gay brothers and sisters who deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and to live in peace,” he said. “For this reason, I respectfully requested the Town of New Glasgow to raise the Rainbow Flag for the duration of the Sochi Games in a show of support to the human rights issues that face the Russian gay community on a daily basis.”

Councillor Henderson Paris, Chair of New Glasgow’s Action Plan to Address Racism and Discrimination said that flying the Rainbow Flag demonstrates that we are supportive of all members of our community.

"Our mandate as a Committee under the UNESCO umbrella is that equal rights, basic human rights, as well as dignity, respect and just treatment for all people of our society are upheld and enforced everywhere. The Olympic Games should be bringing the world together in the true spirit of camaraderie, competitiveness, unity and representing your country.”

This is great for New Glasgow! Showing their support in many ways! Unfortunately the mayor of truro needs to take a few pointers from your mayor after denying the flag to be flown in truro a few years back. Good for you New Glasgow, I'm proud to call you my home town!!!!
