Terry Steeves, store manager, said they had a great turnout even early in the day with one person ordering 150. Staff at the store had made the cupcakes to sell in support of the local animal shelter.
National Cup Cake Day started in 2012 as a way to help raise money for SPCAs across Canada. Central, which Steeves said is a pet-friendly store, saw it as a perfect fit for their organization.
Customers were showing their support early by purchasing the treats.
“I’m sure we had well over 500 cupcakes this morning,” Steeves said.
The store also had a place set up to take pet photographs which they were going to be posting to their Facebook page as well.
Agnes Leavitt, Pictou County SPCA manager, said she is very thankful for all the support they’ve received from Central and others around Pictou County.
“It means a lot to us, but more importantly it means a lot to the animals because it helps us pay our vet bills,” Leavitt said.
They receive no government support, so are very dependent on the generosity of the community to meet their financial needs. Right now they have 52 cats at the shelter.
“We’re a little over our limit but we’ve had a few cruelty cases,” said Leavitt.
They have cats of all ages and sizes.
They also have a fair number of dogs in need of a home.
She said it’s really hard to find a home for the animals sometimes and their shelter has a no-kill policy, so unless animals are adopted they aren’t able to take on anymore.
“The animal stays here until they get adopted,” she said.
To adopt an animal potential owners are required to fill out an application form.
The local SPCA is open for adoptions on Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Wednesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. They now have debit as well.
