Department store adding grocery section

NEW GLASGOW - One of the county’s largest multi- purpose department stores is expanding its product line in include produce and meats.

Rosalyn Carneiro, public relations manager for Wal-Mart Canada, said renovations at the New Glasgow store should be completed by the end of October and will include fresh groceries such as fruit, vegetables and meat area.

The size of building will not expand, she said, adding that renovations will take place within the existing store to accommodate the new product line.  She said Wal-Mart has no plans to discontinue any of its current services or products to accommodate the new feature, but instead make better use of the existing space.

“Everything will be shifted around in the box to accommodate the renovations,” she said.

She said the expansion is part of Wal-Mart’s move into supercenters that proven successful in other parts Canada.

“Canadians respond very well to them because everything is under one roof,” she said. “ A lot of our customers are busy moms who need to maximize their time.  Now they will access to affordable fresh fruit, veggies and meat.”

I am from westville and I live in Calgary. We've had superstores out here for a few years and it really works. In fact, it's so popular that I find they run out of items quite often. That's the only downfall. They need to keep on the demand. I really think it will work really well in New Glasgow. As long as the prices stay low like they are out west. The east gets the shaft on a lot so hopefully not in this case. Thanks!

What's the price of milk got to do with anything? Walmart already sells milk, plus the price of milk is regulated. I'm a lot more interested in the price and quality of the meat and produce. The only thing that keeps prices down is competition; the more competition the better ( see NS Power, NSLC ).
