PICTOU – The Town of Pictou’s financial year is not looking too bright.

Town councillors were told during Monday’s committee of the whole meeting that with only a month left in its fiscal calendar, the town’s books are $102,000 in red.

Town accountant Eldon MacDonald told council some of the larger expenses include roads that are $36,000 over-budget and salaries are $9,000 over-budget. The town also experienced a $25,000 loss in a tax sale.

However, on a more positive note, town staff said the snow-clearing budget is just slightly over and there is hope that the RCMP or the Pictou County Wellness Centre will not be over-budget this fiscal year.

“This is not a good situation to try and make up the money,” he said, adding that any revenue set to come in this fiscal year is already fixed, meaning that accountants already know what they will be receiving.
