TRENTON – At their regular council meeting last night, Trenton passed a resolution to support the United Steelworkers in their campaign to make sure the Westray law amendments are enforced.

The group is looking for support from municipalities in their efforts.

The USW say only 11 charges have been laid since 2004, and they were either withdrawn or ended in a plea bargain.

They are looking for support to educate, train and direct Crown attorneys to apply the Westray amendments; to give responsibility for health and safety fatalities to dedicated prosecutors; to educate, train and direct police to apply the Westray amendments; and to ensure greater co-ordination among regulators, police and Crown so that health and safety regulators are trained to reach out to police when there is a possibility that Westray amendment charges are warranted.
