PICTOU – It could cost the county $35,000 to put lights under an overpass by the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

Councillors had requested that staff look into the cost of lighting the underside of the overpass after concerns were raised about how dark it was in that area for pedestrians who might be travelling between the Wellness Centre and the Highland Square Mall or local hotels.

However, when the price tag came in at $35,000 some councilors said they would have a hard time justifying putting up street lights that cost so much.

Council was told the cost was so high because there is currently no electricity supplied to the overpasses.

Coun. David Parker also asked whether the county was setting itself up for more trouble by encouraging more people to walk along the busy piece of roadway.

“We will be lighting an area where bad accidents can occur,” he said.

Deputy Warden Andy Thompson said pedestrian safety was the most important issue.

The matter will be looked at during budget discussions for the upcoming fiscal year.

Great Idea $35000.00 to light the way for the 6 people that would actually be walking under there to get to the Wellness Center.I believe it is and will be even more obvious in the near future that the Wellness Center itself was a BIG MISTAKE.
