The blizzard predicted has arrived with heavy winds and snow. Drivers are being advised to stay off the road if possible due to reduced visibility.

Visibility is reduced in Pictou County now with the blizzard in full swing.

The section of Drummond Road from Campbell's Road to Foxbrook Road in Westville is closed due to poor visibility.

The snow is expected to change to rain late in the day along the Atlantic coast as well as over the eastern half of the mainland and Cape Breton. Elsewhere the snow is expected to taper off later tonight. Strong northeast winds will develop today giving gusts of up to 120 km/h in some areas. These very strong winds combined with heavy snow will cause widespread whiteout conditions in blowing snow. In general between 30 to 40 centimetres of snow can be expected with this system over most of Nova Scotia. Given the extensive blowing and drifting snow there could be significant variability in snow amounts received within any forecast region.

Additionally this afternoon and evening higher than normal water levels combined with rapidly rising wave activity may produce local flooding along the Atlantic coast of Mainland Nova Scotia during the high tide. These high water levels combined with the heavy pounding surf could give rise to some coastal erosion in some areas. In the Northumberland Strait water levels will also rise this evening but likely will not reach warning levels. There will also be rough and pounding surf along south to east facing shorelines for Mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton starting near mid-day.
