NEW GLASGOW – It’s time to be inspired.
John Ashton, local ambassador for the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards, said people in Pictou County deserve to be recognized for the volunteer efforts.
“This is the third year having the honour of being involved with the PMVA’s. Participating as a regional reviewer has certainly been a humbling experience,” he said. “Some of the volunteer individuals that are nominated are certainly remarkable. I found myself reviewing a nomination and this person so inspired me, I immediately went online to see what this individual looked like. They were everyday people we talk, work with and see on any street.”
The Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards recognize the exceptional contributions of volunteers, local businesses and innovative not-for-profit organizations in improving the well-being of families and communities across the country.
Seventeen awards are granted in total every cycle, consisting of two national awards and 15 regional awards. National award recipients are eligible to identify a not-for-profit organization to receive a $10,000 grant. Regional award recipients are eligible to identify a not-for-profit organization to receive a $5,000 grant.
“Sometimes what these volunteers accomplished, I had envisioned a shining bright aura around them everywhere they were seen,”Ashton said. “These volunteers are unselfish; some go about volunteering not looking for accolades, organizing, encouraging others and making their community a much better place to live. We are very fortunate in Canada, Nova Scotia and in Pictou County to have wonderful individuals that volunteer for the sheer enjoyment of helping others.”
Nominees can be individuals or groups, businesses or not-for-profit organizations. Nominators may be any person or organization with direct knowledge of the nominee’s contribution.
Nominees for all the awards must be Canadian citizens and eligible organizations must be Canadian. All nominees must have contributed to addressing social challenges in their community while political and public advocacy work are excluded.
