New Glasgow waiting to discuss at next council meeting

On Monday night at Stellarton town council, it was clear that councillors didn’t want to wait and see if a proposed memorandum of understanding from New Glasgow, Pictou and the county’s council would suit them.

They want to be part of the process.

In a letter presented by councillor Judith MacLellan and addressed to the three councils working toward shared services and governance, she recommended that Stellarton be involved and have a voice in the MOU process through councillor Ken Francis. It was passed unanimously.

Mayor Joe Hawes said he was open to the option.

“I can’t speak for the other two units, but I’m open to any kind of arrangement because something has to be done.”

He noted that the reason the MOU was put in place because disagreements and a lack of consensus were holding back working.

New Glasgow CAO Lisa MacDonald noted that a response to Stellarton’s request would have to wait until town council meeting next Monday night.

“Outside of reading it in the media we haven’t had any communication with Stellarton,” MacDonald noted. “We understand the letter may be forthcoming but we certainly aren’t in possession of that today.”

Hawes said that there haven’t been any other meetings regarding the MOU between Pictou, New Glasgow and Pictou County since the announcement on Mar. 28 in New Glasgow town council chambers.

“We haven’t met since the announcement in New Glasgow because (Warden) Ronnie (Bailie) was in the hospital,” he said. “There’s been no talks whatsoever but our council is truly connected and on the same page. Everything I know, they know.”

Thank you Judith! Nice to finally see a shift in thinking from Stellarton Council. Hopefully that will continue?
