PICTOU - County councilors are giving their verbal support to a group of volunteers hoping to purchase the Pictou Harbour Golf Club.
The West Pictou Golfers Association sent a letter to county councilors asking for their support in their quest to purchase the club and have it reopened.
Coun. Robert Parker said during Mondayâs council meeting that he had no problem supporting the associationâs goal to raise money since council has put money into other sporting and recreational venues such as the local rinks and walking trails. He said if the association does come looking for financial assistance, it is something council will have to discuss at that time.
Coun. David Parker said that would also be voting in favour of the motion to lend verbal support to the club, but he noted that the volunteers have a large hill to climb if they want to achieve their goal of purchasing the land and building.
âThe biggest problem with the golf course in Pictou is the location,â he said. âThe location is more valuable than the building because the land could be made into building lots or condos.â
He said the asking price of $600,000 for the property and building is significant and than the group will have to maintain and sustain the property after it is purchased.
He added that if the golf course sits unused for too long it will be difficult to bring back to usable grounds.
