Former Prime Minister speaks at a dinner honouring Peter MacKay

Former Prime Minister, and past MP for Central Nova, Brian Mulroney returned to his former riding for a Conservative party fundraiser Friday evening.

The fundraiser was also meant to honour current Central Nova MP Peter Mackay; whose father Elmer Mackay has a standing relationship with Mulroney. Elmer is known for giving up his seat in the Central Nova riding in 1983 so that Mulroney could run.

The dinner, coming in at $300 a plate, was held at the Nova Scotia Community College, Pictou Campus. The evening began with social time and bar in the cafeteria, moving downstairs to the gymnasium for the dinner. A reception followed afterward back in the cafeteria.

Mulroney arrived to a packed room, to mingle briefly before heading to the dinner where he was a guest speaker.

First arriving in Pictou County at the age of 16 Mulroney said, “it looked like Las Vegas to me, coming from Baie-Comeau.”

Mulroney had attended St. Francis Xavier University before running in Pictou County, so he equated coming to New Glasgow to run as an MP, as coming home.

“I had six members of parliament that offered to step down to open their seats, from British Colombia to Newfoundland and I had no hesitation,” said Mulroney, “Elmer was kind enough to offer his seat, and I was right there, there was no hesitation, this was it for me.”

The former Prime Minister also reflected on his time here during his time as an MP for Central Nova.

“Nothing but good memories, the people of Central Nova are fabulous and it was a delight to campaign here, and an honour to represent them in the House of Commons.”
