WESTVILLE – Residents in Westville will soon be missing a long-standing fixture in their community.

Bob Ferguson stands near the gun case of his store in Westville. Ferguson’s Corner Store has the largest array of hunting supplies in Pictou County.

That’s because Bob Ferguson is retiring from work.

He runs Ferguson’s Corner Store in Westville, which will be closing this summer, unless a new owner takes over.

Ferguson will be turning 76-years-old this year and has decided it is time for retirement.

“I’m hoping somebody will buy it, it’s up for sale.”

He hopes if someone buys it, they’ll keep it the same as it is now.

The store has been known to be the largest hunting store in eastern Nova Scotia.

“We’re the only Boy Scout shop in Nova Scotia now, and they’re all gone except us.”

Ferguson was involved in Boy Scouts for 40 years, ran the store and was in the fire department for 37 years. He’s also one of the founding members of the Pictou County Rivers Association and is still a member.

He and his wife, Marge, have been very dedicated to the store since they opened.

“We built the building ourselves…the two of us worked here night and day, seven days a week for 37 years.”

He credits some of his success to clientele from around the world.

“I’ve had them come from Germany, China, United States, all over Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I., Newfoundland. We have a guest book in here they can sign.”

He also credits the success from working hard in the business.

“If you can work it, you can actually make money out of it… The business is built up, and the clientele is here, we just need somebody to run it.”

He said he has met so many wonderful customers who he will miss.

“I’m going to miss the kids because we have penny candy here and I had kids coming in here when we first opened; and now I’ve got their children coming in and their children coming in. Three generations coming in here now.”

Unless someone purchases the business, the store will close July 31.

We wish you both well on your upcoming retirement and would really like to thank you for your support of the Lions by selling out Radio Bingo Cards weekly. We are sure that in many if not all instances you bought the cards yourselves and for that we are truly grateful. Have a long and great retirement
