The Dooley Family of Westville were one of the teams that participated in the 2013 Walk for ALS. Last year’s Walk was able to raise over $14,000.00 for patient care and research. This year’s event will be held on June 7in Westville, and the committee is looking forward to another successful walk.
It’s that time of year again.
Plans are well underway for the 2014 Pictou County Walk for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). This is the third year that the walk has been held in Pictou County and the committee is excited for this year’s event.
ALS is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease that causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Eighty per cent of patients will pass away within two to five years of diagnosis.
Sara Watters (walk coordinator) and the rest of the walk committee are looking for the community’s help to fight against this disease. This year’s event will be held on June 7 in Westville. Registration will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Westville Civic Centre, with the opening ceremonies starting at 10:30 a.m.
Live entertainment, a barbecue and door prizes are some of the events that are planned for during the walk, as the committee is hoping for another great turn out.
More than just a fundraising event, the walk is a celebration of hope for those living with ALS, and a celebration of lives lived for the family and friends of those who have lost their fight to ALS.
So far they have raised $23,300 to help those that currently have ALS or to fund research.
