PICTOU – The first red carpet rolled out for royalty in Pictou County was in 1939 for the Queen Mother and King George VI.

Since, there have been two other royal visits to Pictou County with an important fourth visit coming up this May.

It was announced April 11, that Prince Charles and Camilla would be visiting the Town of Pictou in May on Victoria Day weekend. The county has been buzzing ever since with talk of royalty.

“I think its great!” said Cathy Dunphy of Pictou, “monarchy is important to us, I think it’s wonderful that they are coming to visit.” The reaction to the royal couple’s visit has been mostly positive so far, “I think it’ll boost the tourism,” said Rose Lynch, also of Pictou.

Pictou County is no stranger to monarchy either, with the central and northeast branch of the Nova Scotia Monarchist League based in Pictou County. The league holds a Monarchy dinner most years, with a different theme each year. This year the dinner is commemorating the beginning of the First World War, as well as a dedication to three battalions from Pictou.

“I think it’s kind of nice,” said Olive Pastor, about Charles and Camilla’s visit to Pictou. Pastor is the current chair of the league branch. The league is not planning on doing anything for the big visit however.

The last royal visit to Pictou County was in 1991, when Princess Anne came to Pictou to honour the arrival of the ship Hector to the port of Pictou in 1773.

If Charles and Camilla’s appearance is like earlier visits, recalls Clyde Macdonald, a member of the Pictou County Roots Society, it will be brief.

“It lasted two hours, just two hours,” said Macdonald, about Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip’s visit to Pictou County in 1959. “I remember seeing the Queen and the Prince at the New Glasgow High School,” said MacDonald, ”I remember 1959, that was a big deal, there was thousands of people there.”
