Sheree Fitch has been the writer in residence from October 2013 until this month. She gave a speech at council and read two of her poems.

“I’ve learned this year as the writer for Pictou/Antigonish Regional Library that we are a place of stories, it is no wonder I ended up in Pictou County.”

She said she has realized what it’s like to live around wonderful neighbours in a wonderful community.

She said she has met many poets, storytellers, and authors in the county.

“I just cannot believe the power of story in this place, the history that’s here.”

She is planning to write a poetry book about Pictou County sometime, she said.

“The one thing I’ve learned, especially by being a poet, is that you can write all the poetry in the world, but it’s really about someone receiving it. A poem isn’t a poem unless its heard, a story isn’t a story unless somebody reads it and so I learned really early on that it wasn’t about me, it was about a whole lot of people caring enough about children to put good books in their hands.”

She said it’s not only about the teachers and poets who teach children to really give back to the community.

She said Steve MacLean at the library had asked her to be writer in residence for 10 years, and she finally said yes this past year.

She is very happy that she did.

“Thank you for welcoming me and having me part of this wonderful community, I especially thank the library.”

Pictou County Warden Ron Baillie presented Fitch with a photo plaque and flowers for her contributions to the library and the community.
