Recipients in Pictou County include: The Forbes Street Presenters Society ($24,980), The Steeltown Friendly Group ($16,000), the Pictou County Trails Association ($24,200) and the Pictou Arts Society ($25,764).

“This county, this community just thrives when it comes to that type of personal talent,” said MacKay. “We need to embrace that, and I also want to say that as your representative, how proud I am to work with so many organizations that support seniors in local projects across Central Nova that enable them to showcase their great talent, skill and all of their life accomplishments that just make our community great.”

The New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) is a federal grants and contributions program that supports projects led or inspired by seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and their communities.

Through the NHSP, the Government of Canada encourages seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences to the benefit of others. Since 2006, the NHSP has funded more than 13,000 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada.

NHSP funding is targeted to both community-based and pan-Canadian projects.

“Canadian seniors have played a central role, as we all know, in building our country,” MacKay. “They’ve earned our respect, our admiration, and seniors in turn deserve our support to help them enjoy the best quality of life possible and that’s why this program is magic, in my estimation. This is a program that translates support into grass roots initiatives that really benefit everyone in the community.”

Over 1,770 NHSP community-based projects were approved through the 2013-2014 call for proposals for a total of more than $33.4 million in funding.
