PICTOU – A New Glasgow has been fined $300 for having more than 100 grams of marijuana in his possession.

Matthew John English, 26, was arrested Dec. 18, 2013, after the Integrated Street Crime Unit executed a warrant on his New Glasgow apartment and located 51 grams of marijuana shake and 57 grams of marijuana buds.  Police also seized $340 in cash, a scale and brass knuckles.

English wasn’t home at the time, but was later arrested at his workplace. He had no criminal record and his lawyer said the brass knuckles were not being used as a weapon.

Judge Del Atwood agreed with the Crown’s recommendation of a $300 fine but also imposed a $150 victim surcharge. He was given six months to pay.

He said English is lucky he wasn’t charged with something else considering that a scale, cash and a possible weapon were found in the apartment along with the marijuana.

“Someone might say more is going on than simple possession, but that is all you are charged with in this court this morning,” said Atwood.
