Hearing Bruce Guthro play is like listening to a musical storybook: you are introduced with a story, followed by a song that captures a feeling just for that memory.
Guthro, who began doing songwriters circles close to 20 years ago at the ECMAs, is bringing his unique take on them to Pictou County for the first time on May 2 at 8 p.m.
‚ÄúIt‚Äôs a first actually,‚ÄĚ said Guthro about the show in Pictou. The last time he played in the county was to commemorate the Town of Trenton‚Äôs 100th anniversary.
As it sounds, the songwriters circle is set up in a circle, with the audience sitting around the artists as they share their stories and play their music.
‚ÄúWhat I‚Äôve tried to do is get the artist to come out of their stage self,‚ÄĚ said Guthro, who would like it to feel more like people sitting around in a living room or something similar, than a formal show. Guthro also tries to add a little variety into the mix as well.
‚ÄúUsually what we do is take two veterans and I mix in someone up-and-coming,‚ÄĚ said Guthro. For this particular songwriters circle he is inviting Laura Smith, Dave Gunning, and Kim Dunn.
‚ÄúI try to stack it with people I know will work really well, for the first one,‚ÄĚ said Guthro.
The artist is also thinking of beginning a quarterly series of songwriters circles in Pictou at the deCoste Centre. Although he has worked with most artists in the area already, he says that newcomers to the songwriters circle must prove themselves.
‚ÄúThey have to be out there taking it seriously and trying to making a living at it,‚ÄĚ said Guthro.
The show itself proves to be a good time with good music, ‚ÄúIt‚Äôs a lot of laughter, joking and picking on each other,‚ÄĚ said Guthro, but his favourite part he said is, ‚ÄúI get to sit in a circle of my peers and be a fan.‚ÄĚ
Tickets are $42 and are available at the deCoste
