Springhill has called a public meeting to explain the town's financial situation on May 15 at the community centre.

SPRINGHILL – Springhill’s town council is holding a public meeting on May 15 to provide more details on the financial situation facing the town.

“We appreciate that Springhill residents are looking for more information so they can better understand council’s decision to make application for dissolution,” Mayor Max Snow said in a news release on Friday. “We will provide details on the town’s finances, answer questions and share an update on the progress of the transition.”

The meeting will be held in the CIBC Room at the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre beginning at 6:30 p.m.

It comes after a group of concerned citizens announced it will be holding its own public meeting on May 1.

Former MLA Murray Scott said the mayor and council have been invited to the May 1 meeting, which will also take place at the community centre.

The group, of which Scott is a member, was formed after a group of residents came together to express concern that they have not received enough information about why council chose dissolution and amalgamation with the Municipality of Cumberland.

Council passed a motion on March 4 to apply to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board for dissolution.

John Leefe, former mayor for the Region of Queens Municipality, has been appointed transition co-ordinator to assist with the process, as outlined in the Municipal Government Act, and to guide discussions for the town to become part of the Municipality of the County of Cumberland effective April 1, 2015.

Representatives from the Department of Municipal Affairs and the transition committee will participate in the meeting.

It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the CIBC Room of the Dr. Carson and Marian Murray Community Center.
