It’s a great time to be coming into a leadership position at the Chamber of Commerce, says new president Jim Fitt.

Jim Fitt is the new president of the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce.

Over the last year the Chamber has seen it’s membership increased and more people are turning out for events. Perhaps just as importantly, Fitt has witnesses as a shift has happened where the Chamber is now being invited to the discussion table by municipalities and other groups.

“ The chamber has had some highs and lows since its inception particularly as of late because our RDA has ceased to exist,” Fitt said. “There are many people and organizations in our community who are looking for economic leadership and the Chamber stepped up and fit that role. Because of that people started becoming more engaged in the Chamber.”

At this year’s AGM there was 50 per cent more people in attendance than last year.

Fitt said he believes there are four things a community needs to succeed. They need a shared vision of what economic prosperity looks like, education, mentorship and time together as a business community to share and discuss and learn from each other.

Those are all needs that the Chamber seeks to fill from it’s relationship with the Nova Scotia Community College for education to it’s regular breakfasts with guest speakers.

But as an incoming president, Fitt does seem room for growth. He said the Chamber currently only has about 10 per cent of the potential groups and businesses that could be part of the Chamber.

“We still have so many organizations we’d like to bring in,” he said.

He personally has set a goal of seeing the membership double during his term. He’d also like to strengthen relationships with the municipalities and develop on the relationship that’s been growing as of late.

“We’re now being invited more than ever to sit at tables we haven’t been asked to sit at for a very long time,” he said.

He also hopes to continue to see new businesses start and old one’s prosper. Outside of the community, he said Pictou County is known as a community of entrepreneurs and has been for some time.

“We have to live up to that,” he says.

Fitt is the founder of Velsoft and currently served as vice president for the Chamber.
