PICTOU – County property owners receiving their interim tax bills this week might notice a sharp increase in comparison to last year’s.
That isn’t due, however, to an overall increase, and in fact will mean a smaller final bill to pay in October compared to last year.
The change to the calculation was made because it worked better with the installation of new computer software at the Municipality of Pictou County tax office.
Under the former system, calculation of the interim bill – with payment due in June – was based on the current assessment and last year’s tax rate, but didn’t take into account such services as sewer, streetlights, hydrants or fire protection. So that first bill was substantially less than half the overall taxes due.
Under the new system, the interim bill is based on last year’s overall payment, divided by two.
The remaining portion, due in October, should be close to the interim bill, within a few dollars.
