Red Shield Appeal at Pictou Lodge sold out

NEW GLASGOW – Raising money for a good cause has never tasted so good.

The Salvation Army of northeastern Nova Scotia is kicking off their annual Red Shield Campaign with a mouthwatering celebration at Pictou Lodge this Tuesday.

Three chefs will show their seafood chops, offering demos and free samples of lobster and mussels. The Kilted Chef, Alain Bosse, Pictou native Chef Andrew Farrell of 2 Doors Down in Halifax and Pictou Lodge Chef Thomas Carey will be serving up tasty seafood dishes.

Taste of Nova Scotia recently recognized Carey as having the province’s best seafood chowder in a chowder cook-off at the Saltscapes Expo last month.

“We’ve got a wonderful night of music, food and prizes lined up,” said Pearl Joyce, Thrift Store co-ordinator. “We try to do it a little better each year and the response has been overwhelming.”

So overwhelming that all the tickets for the event are sold out.

But for those who will be attending, in addition to food, there will be an auction and music, featuring Fleur Mainville and Ray Stewart on guitar.

Salvation Army staff has lovingly put together the baskets being auctioned off.

“We have 10 baskets filled with related items, such as health care, for a girl and garden basket,” said Joyce. “There will be other items to be auctioned off separately such as a load of gravel, new double bed and a night’s stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Stellarton.”

The head of Family Services for the Salvation Army of northeastern Nova Scotia, Captain Dolores Abbott, is originally from Newfoundland and Labrador and has created a basket with items from The Rock.

The evening will be capped off with motivational speaker Buhle Dlamini, an entrepreneur from South Africa who founded Young and Able personal and business development consultancy. 

All funds raised will go to the Red Shield Campaign and, in turn, back to the community. The campaign started May 1 with a flag-raising ceremony on the New Glasgow waterfront.

“We serve clients from the Pictou Causeway to the Canso Causeway within our group and a lot of people don’t know that,” said Joyce. “While we want to raise funds for the campaign we also want to raise awareness for the activities we do.”

That includes the Christmas toy drive that helps to deliver toys and clothing to families in need during the holidays.

“We delivered to 123 families that had 315 children,” said Reta Owens, a family support worker. “We also fund 25 children to attend our Salvation Army camp, Scotia Glen.”

Despite receiving no government funding, the group maintains an emergency fund for those in need, a food bank, emergency accommodations and fuel program to name a few.

The corps in Westville started providing services over 125 years ago. Services provided are linked directly to the needs of Pictou County and northeastern Nova Scotia

The Red Shield Fundraiser will be held on May 13 at Pictou Lodge at 7 p.m.
