NEW GLASGOW – Kesha-Lena Weir’s love of makeup started young. She went to her first professional makeup artist when she was 12 years old.
Now, she’s 29 and opening her own salon in her hometown.
“Making women feel beautiful makes me happy,” Weir said.
Beau Ideal Beauty Salon aims to offer more than a typical hair salon. Weir’s specialty is professional makeup and mink, synthetic and coloured lash extensions, something she says Pictou County could use.
“I’m trying to bring something here that we don’t have,” she said, adding that it’s a modern addition.
The only thing they’re missing is a nail technician, Weir said, referring to the salon as a 'one-stop shop for beauty.'
With her passion for makeup and a family background in owning businesses, opening her own shop seemed only natural.
“Entrepreneurs are in my blood.”
Despite job losses in the community, Weir expects to be able to thrive.
“Women always want to look good,” she said, adding that she’s also bringing two jobs to the county.
Weir will be joined by hairstylists Sarah Knowles and Hilary MacPherson.
Knowles graduated from NSCC in December, while MacPherson finishes up classes at the Hair Design Centre in Halifax this summer.
Weir worked in a nursing home for seven years and on her breaks, she would offer makeovers to her co-workers and residents.
She recalled one woman told her that she had made a positive change in her life.
“I literally went to school after that.”
Weir opened on the weekend, booking clients and selling makeup to a steady crowd, she said.
They begin their appointments Tuesday at the shop on Archimedes Street.
