TRENTON – The Pictou County Rivers Association will hold its 16th annual Children’s Fisherama at Trenton Park on Saturday. The event is free and open to children ages four to 15 years.

Participants can expect to catch brook trout and are permitted to keep up to five fish. Adults are not allowed to fish in the park during this event. All applicable Nova Scotia fishing regulations will apply.

“The Fisherama is a great opportunity for the local children to come out and try to catch a fish and for novice fisherman to learn about how to angle for trout,” says Alfred White Jr., president of the Pictou County Rivers Association. “It is a fun event and there will be a variety of prizes for the participants. The pond at Trenton Park will be stocked with trout just before the event so the opportunity for the young people to catch a fish is excellent.”

The 2013 Children’s Fisherama was a huge success with more than 200 kids turning up to fish that morning. The most popular baits used by participants during last year’s Fisherama were worms and night crawlers.

The Fisherama will start at 9 a.m. and run until noon. Prizes will be awarded to the children who catch the largest speckled trout. As well, there will be five tagged fish put in the pond and any child catching one of these tagged trout will receive a $5 cash prize. All participants will be eligible for draw prizes.

The PCRA will be providing free cold drinks and snacks for all Fisherama participants. Many local businesses donate the prizes and the treats and the PCRA gratefully acknowledges their assistance with putting on this fun day for the children.

The Pictou County Rivers Association was formed in 1990 by a dedicated group of conservation-minded anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. For the past 20 years, the membership-based organization has focused its efforts on conservation initiatives, protecting and restoring fish habitat, education and environmental stewardship.
