Archbishop to speak throughout week at St. John the Baptist Parish

St. John the Baptist Parish in New Glasgow will be hosting Archbishop Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton, Alberta this week.


Smith was born in Halifax and studied at St. Mary’s University and at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1987. He pursued further studies in Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and earned a Licence in 1993 and a Doctorate in 1998. 

After some fruitful years of ministry in the Archdiocese of Halifax, he was appointed Bishop of Pembroke on April 27, 2002 and ordained to the episcopate on June 18, 2002.  Pope Benedict XVI, on March 22, 2007, appointed him to the Metropolitan See of Edmonton. 

Smith was formally installed as seventh Archbishop of Edmonton in 2007.  He serves as President of the Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, and is past president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Here is a schedule of events for the visit.



7 p.m. Opening Mass with Talk on Discipleship


10 a.m. Coffee with the Archbishop.  He will give a brief presentation on Mary, the Mother of Jesus, a model of discipleship.  This will be followed by a discussion.

7 p.m. Mass with Talk on Discipleship



10 a.m. Coffee with the Archbishop for a very informal discussion on the presentations given at Mass. A question and answer period.

7 p.m. Closing Mass with Talk on Discipleship.

Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.  All welcome.
