A store in downtown New Glasgow appears to be selling Hells Angels clothing and is rumoured to have ties to the organization.

A Gate Keepers bike was seen in the front window of this building on MacLean Street, New Glasgow. Some have said it is run by Gate Keepers, a Hells Angels affiliated group. Others say it is Hells Angels themselves.

At 181 MacLean Street, there appears to be a storefront set up. On a paper are the words Twisted Needs written, seeming to signify the name of the store. Another sign saying private property is in the window.

Clothing inside has 81 written on it which is a number associated with Hells Angels. H is the eighth letter and A is the 1st letter of the alphabet.

A large number of bikes have been seen in front of the building. On Monday morning there was a bike in the window with Gate Keepers written on it. Gate Keepers is an affiliate of the Hells Angels.

A man out front said he was there to pick up a part for his bike. Asked if it was a Gate Keepers store, he said it was HA.

Asked if it was just a club house, the man said he couldn’t say.

Police warned last year that the Hells Angels were trying to regain control of Nova Scotia from the existing Bacchus outlaw motorcycle gang. Although some say that Bacchus is a Hells Angels puppet group too.

Gate Keepers motorcycle club set up shop along Highway 7 in Musquodoboit Harbour, CBC reported in April 2013. According to that news agency there are several Bacchus chapters in Atlantic Canada — one in Nova Scotia, three in New Brunswick, one in Prince Edward Island and two in Newfoundland.

The property at 181 MacLean Street, is actively listed by HLM Realties Ltd. for $229,000. The ground level has 2,200 square feet.

The building use to house a plumbing company.

Attempts to reach the building owner were unsuccessful.

Gerry Horne, past president of the Pictou County Cruisers, a family friendly motorcycle club that operated for years in the county said he found out about the group about a month ago from a friend, who said he had run into someone at a gas station in Sheet Harbour and told him they were setting up in New Glasgow and heard it was on MacLean Street. He said he hasn’t heard much since.

He said he personally doesn’t like it and believes it will hurt the reputation of all motorcyclists in the area.

“We try our best to do what’s right,” he said. “Most of us are seniors. I’m 82. I don’t know… it’s not good. It’s not good at all.”

He said it’s the first time he can recall any group like this setting up in New Glasgow.

Cindy-Lee MacLean is the current acting president of the Pictou County Cruisers, who have been struggling to find active members lately, although she says they are still operating.

She said most people in the county know their group is family friendly and she hopes there is no negative impact from this new group in town. A few of the Gate Keepers did show up to one of their club’s rides recently though although they weren’t wearing colours.

She said there is nothing they could do to prevent them from riding. She said she’s seen quite a few bikers wearing Gate Keepers clothing in Trenton as well.

“Personally I have concerns just because of who they are or the reputation that precedes them. I don’t know any of them personally.”

Investigators are monitoring the situation with the New Glasgow Regional Police Service, a representative from the department said.

Police said there are members from different motorcycle clubs who have come into town and when they do, police monitor those situations.

I would wait and see if it does cause any problems before jumping to conclusions. Maybe it is just a store. I do believe if anyone joins something called "Hell's Angels" that is well known to be affiliated with crime and that the police watch, that you aren't just a 'good law abiding person' though. Otherwise you would join the Brotherhood or the Pictou County Cruisers etc. I think it is safe to say that people that join HA etc have at least a little edge to them or looking for something not so pure/innocent.. doesn't matter if they do have family (most people do, criminal or not) and doesn't matter if they have a job. They specifically joined HA for a reason. But hopefully even if it is an MC it doesn't bring any more crime to the area. It is bad enough here as it is now. I say wait and see before panicking. It could be nothing but a motorcycle themed retail outlet etc.

You should probably be more concerned about the mental health system in the schools , drugging all the children .

The way I see it, we don't know them personally. It's not our place to judge. They're not actively judging us. Maybe they're fantastic people. Maybe they're not. But complain about them being here and they've done nothing wrong?? What about the lawyer convicted of sexual assault this week in Halifax. Should we ban all lawyers? People need to find something to do, and stop looking for trouble where there is none.

Safe in their neighborhood....ask the parents of the 8 yr old boy killed in Montreal a few years back how safe they felt. I must say the HA have lead very productive lives....blowing up bars and killing prison guards . Yeah very productive. The toy ride is a ploy to garner some good pr. No sympathies here.

Great News, finally our streets will be safe again. They can do the job as our law enforcement officers. If they were here years ago, bath salts would never been heard of. 100% support them.

I think this happening could be a great thing. To have control over what comes into this town. Control over the crime that goes on. We are known for being the highest rate of bath salts in the country. And we are votes one of the worst places in Canada. As "neighbor" says maybe it will control the wannabes.

who cares. stay out of their way and they will leave you alone. i've always heard the safest communities are around the clubhouses for obvious reasons and that area needs it. they say the mafia ran chicago better than the police did back in the 20's.

I listen to comments made by people like Cindy-Lee and Gerry all the time, but do you ever hear any of the good things that the HA's do. Like the fund raisers these people put on is very beneficial and if you stay out of their way they stay out of yours. If there's crime on the streets it's because there are other elements at play not always biker factions. I don't ride, never have, and never will but, I can tell you that the people I know associated with these groups, are some of the best people you will ever meet. So until they give reason to be disliked, don't knock them down you might be surprised by how much good these folks may do for this community.

I don't think that we should believe everything we read. These aren't bad men, these men are sons, fathers, grandfathers, husbands and hard workers who are brothers to each other. Once people realize that they're here to do no harm that they are just people like you and I who happen to drive a bike that's when youll finally realize what a bunch of false information had been portrayed upon these gentlemen.

I think everybody shouldn't believe what they're reading and get to know these men before making judgement. These are hard working men who own their own businesses or who work hard to make our roads an communities safe they're also fathers, husbands, sons, grandfathers... They're family oriented men who are here for the good of the Community and I think once everybody realizes that they'll then realize the false advertisement that's taking place about who they are and what kind of people these men are!

I am a close and dear friend of the man who founded the Pictou County chapter of the GateKeepers. He is a respected veteran of over 23 years and served in many hotspots over those years. I met many of his fellow GateKeepers and they too are great guys, not looking to cause trouble, just be in a biker association. Let's worry about the real troublemakers and miscreants. I have lived a crime free life for 46 years and so have most of them. Can any of the naysayers here say the same thing?

To believe that bikers being in town is a new thing shows you live a sheltered life. There have been bikers here all along. Everything good can come out of this. I support them and the 81.

People need to get the facts before judging the book by the cover. These are good men who are hard workers, own their own business and strive towards creating a great life for their families. They are here for the community not to harm them. Once anybody has the chance to meet one of these great guys that's when you'll know how blown out this whole thing is.....

I agree with allowing people to be judged on their own merits, I agree that former neighbors of clubs of this type have reported that having this organization in the community had a positive effect on petty crimes, but I think that if this is in fact an affiliate of Hells Angels, the readers need a reality check on what in fact is the real business of the HA's. Please do not be lulled into a false sense of security by urban legends and the glamorization of the "outlaw culture”. And of course if in fact they are just business men and "their ole ladies" who enjoy riding motorcycles and raise money for teddy bears, by all means leave em alone and wish them luck. As always buyer beware and check your facts.
