Antigonish families, businesses and institutions may soon be able to use natural gas as Heritage Gas plans an expansion into the area.

Heritage Gas is submitting an application to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to expand into Antigonish County. Natural gas distribution service will be provided to Antigonish customers through the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) technology.

“Communities understand all the good things that come from natural gas, and we are pleased to work with Antigonish to ensure they have energy options that are affordable and clean,” said Bill Swan, president of Heritage Gas. “Using natural gas will save the community millions in energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Heritage Gas coming to Antigonish is welcome news to local leaders.

“The delivery of natural gas to Antigonish is good for the economic future of this region. We are always looking for ways to help businesses and families to save money in a way that’s good for the environment,” said Town of Antigonish Mayor Carl Chisholm. “We are encouraged by Heritage Gas’s plans to expand to Antigonish and welcome the chance to work with Heritage Gas to deliver it.”

Antigonish County Warden Russell Boucher noted that natural gas is an important part of Antigonish’s community energy plan.

“Natural gas provides more heating options to residents and businesses," said Boucher. “We are excited with the real potential of natural gas coming to Antigonish. Today’s announcement is an important step towards having more affordable, sustainable energy sources for the community.”

Heritage Gas Limited is a Nova Scotia-based company formed in 2003 for the purpose of operating a regulated natural gas distribution franchise in the province. Heritage Gas provides natural gas service to more than 5,200 customers in Halifax, Pictou, Amherst and Oxford.
