Superheroes suit up.
This weekend is the ninth annual Pictou County Relay for Life and organizers are asking participants to don superhero attire and join the fight against cancer by raising money and awareness.

Participants in last year’s survivor’s walk carry a banner as part of the 2013 Pictou County Relay for Life. This year’s event is Saturday from noon to midnight.

Organizer Susan Kaiser said registration has gone great so far for the Saturday event with about 46 teams planning to take part and collect pledges for the Canadian Cancer Society.

She said the number of teams fluctuates from year to year, but this year’s event is up from the previous.

The goal for this year is to raise $155,000.

Participants will notice one major change this year with the event. Instead of the traditional 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. event that the Relay this year, Kaiser said they decided to try a new approach and go with a noon to midnight schedule. This has been piloted in a couple other areas with success and she believes it will work better.

“The reason we’re doing that is to see if we can get more community involvement,” she said.

She also believes it might allow the cancer survivors who take part, to stay a little longer.

Traditional parts of the Relay, including the luminaries will still go ahead.

Lots of entertainment is planned for throughout the day as well as some activities including Zumba musical chairs, a cake walk and yoga. There will also be a barbecue for the teams and others from the community who attend.

Joanne Cumminger will be the guest speaker. She is retiring this year from her role as cancer patient navigator with the Pictou County Health Authority and was named honourary chair of the event. In her job she has met most of the cancer patients in the county.

The Relay will be taking place at the Parkdale Track in New Glasgow.
