Over $100,000 raised during Pictou County event

NEW GLASGOW – There is expected to be more feedback pour in over the coming days and weeks, but the initial thoughts were only positive on changes to the Pictou County Relay for Life.

Susan Kaiser, Relay for Life district coordinator for northeast Nova Scotia, said this was the second event she was part of that took place from noon to midnight. Her first was in Port Hawkesbury this May.

“Anyone that I talked to it was all positive, they all loved the time change,” she said. “The weather was cloudy, so some left and came back, but we had a lot of good comments about the events happening throughout the day and our positive committee members. The team spirit was awesome and we’re getting lots of feedback already.”

This year they had over 450 participants on 46 teams, which resulted in $100,172 raised for the Canadian Cancer Society.

“We’re very pleased with how the event went this year and what is really positive about it is that we already have 13 teams signed up and paid for next year already,” she said.

Kaiser added that in the past they had eight teams sign up right away for the next year, but this is the biggest early registration they’ve had in nine years of the Relay for Life in Pictou County.

“Each year the number of teams and funds raised seems to fluctuate, some years you’re up and some you’re down, but the community consistently shows outstanding support,” she said. “We do have returning teams that are here each year, some that have been involved for all nine years (in Pictou County).”

In the next week or two the Pictou County organizing committee will meet to do their annual wrap up. They will look at the event in many ways; from how many luminaries were sold to what events they have taking place throughout the day. Kaiser said that is important to continue to be successful each year, adding that they will also be emailing all the teams for an informal survey on their thoughts.
