Westville’s Canada Day events got started Tuesday evening with a seniors appreciation night held at the Westville Civic Centre.

The fire department, which organizes the event every year, has plenty of activities planned for the rest of the week through to Canada Day as well.

Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. there will be Cruise Night at the Westville Car wash Reim Parking Lot on Main Street. Chair of the event, Chris Selig, said they expect around 30 antique cars. He said their fortunate this year to have the North Nova Chapter Jeep Club sponsoring the event.

On Saturday at noon will be the Children’s Costume Parade which will go from the fire station to Acadia Park with prizes, entertainment and a barbecue. At 1 p.m. will be the 55th crowning of the Canada Day Queen. Helen Dunn, communications adviser for the events, said they have invited back all the former queens they could get in touch with to come and be part of that. The Princess Ball will follow from 9 p.m. to midnight at the Westville Fire Hall.

Sunday at 1 p.m. will be the Little Misses Fashion Show at the Westville Civic Centre.

At 7 p.m. on Monday, there will be a band concert in Acadia Park with the Pictou County Pipes and Drums performing.

The parade, for which the town is well known for hosting, will be held at 11 a.m. on Canada Day and go from North Main to Victoria Park. Parade trophies will be awarded at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Canada Day Queen Pageant.

Fireworks will be held at 10 p.m. or as soon as it’s dark enough.

“It’s certainly a full week,” Dunn said.

Selig said none of it would be possible without the dedication of the volunteers who start working on the next year as soon as the events end.
