PICTOU -  A 50-year-old New Glasgow man with a lengthy criminal record has been sentenced to time in federal prison for breaches and drug possession.

Elvin Scott Landry was sentenced to two years and one day in Pictou provincial court Monday after pleading guilty to three breaches of court orders, theft and possession of a small amount of hydromorphone pills.

The offences took place between April 28 and May 27 in New Glasgow.

Defence lawyer Doug Lloy said his client knew that jail time was in his future and he asked to be sent to a federal prison rather than a provincial one.

He said his client has a narcotics addiction and if he could eliminate drugs from his life, he would probably not be of any trouble to anyone.
