Artistic Director Greencorn says despite cancellation, possibility of smaller event this summer exists

There was simply no other option than cancellation.

Stanfest Artistic Director Troy Greencorn said that

organizers are asking for a couple days to ready themselves for handling refund requests. They expect this will be later today or tomorrow for Ticketpro customers and Monday for those who purchased tickets and camping by phone through our office.

That’s what Stanfest Artistic Director Troy Greencorn wrote in an update to ticket and camping customers on the event’s website.

“A day has now passed, since our decision to cancel the festival, and what a day it has been,” he wrote. “We felt there was no option other than to keep our patrons, artists and the general public out of harms way.

The update noted work that’s taking place in preparation for the storm, including tearing down 30 tents, contacting media and attempts to remove a 4,800 sq. ft. tent.

“Because of the winds, we can’t get this tent down and it may be destroyed before it is safe to get it on the ground,” Greencorn wrote. It was some validation at the end of the day yesterday that our decision while tough, was the only one we could have made.”

He noted that the decision to cancel early was made because of the thousands of Stanfest goers who would soon be loading up their vehicles, tents, trailers to head to Canso. For Greencorn, the responsibility of inviting thousands of campers into a hurricane zone was a responsibility and risk he just could not justify.

“The heaviest weight we feel today is the financial worry and strain of this situation, and the need to begin issuing refunds. We know this will dominate our coming days.”

He said that there would be no way to have all the artists be available to push Stanfest later in the summer, though he indicated that it may be possible to stage a smaller event.

“One thing we can commit to everyone, this is not the final chapter for Stanfes,” the update stated. “After 17 years of success and growth, one storm will not lead to our demise.”

The organizers are asking for a couple days to ready themselves for handling refund requests. They expect this will be later today or tomorrow for Ticketpro customers and Monday for those who purchased tickets and camping by phone through our office.

“We will post here on the website and in our social networks as soon as we are organized and ready to begin fielding these requests. We ask for your patience and understanding, as we need a little time to deal with the immediate crisis, and get prepared for this phase.”

Greencorn said that it is Stanfest’s plan to field the exact same festival, barring some artist changes stemming from other commitments they may have, on July 3, 4 and 5, 2015 and that they would be happy to replace 2014 tickets with 2015 tickets.

He also announced a new partnership category within Stanfest’s sponsorship program called Friends of Stanfest, whose benefits would include annual discounts on tickets and camping, monthly newsletters with members-only information and previews and recognition in our annual program booklet.

“In conclusion, we thank you all for your understanding at this difficult time. My biggest fear when we made this decision was that we would face anger and it would damage our brand and the momentum of the event,” wrote Greencorn. “As the hours pass, I am more and more confident that this is a mere speed bump, a big one albeit, but just a bump. On behalf of all of our team of 700, thank you for understanding and supporting us.”
