PICTOU – Bring your running shoes, drink lots of water and prepare for a bit of rain.

That’s the latest from Terry Curley, a race director with Johnny Miles and the 38th Annual Run for the Lobster event.

“Everything is go,” said Curley. “I think our Nova Scotia runners are used to a little running in the rain.”

But there may be little to no rain when race day arrives on Sunday. The forecast in Pictou for Sunday at print time was a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 25 C.

Still, Curley said site preparation for the run has been affected by the weather system created by Hurricane Arthur.

“We’ve had to change our setup routine since we usually put up the tent, portable toilet and other items on Saturday night.”

He noted that anything that the wind won’t affect, such as heavy metal gates, would be set up last night. Going ahead with the run doesn’t mean that all options weren’t considered, however.

“We have been consulting with Run Nova Scotia, our supervising body, and have been keeping an eye on the forecast,” said Curley. “If anything, it looks like it will be warm and muggy like last year’s run.”

Curley noted that if the forecast calls for lightning however, the committee would reconsider the decision to hold the run.

“Certainly the weather throws a wrench into the plans but, as a committee, we concluded all the logistics are in place. Everything from food to medals to the Chip Timing people from Fredericton has been arranged. To cancel would just be unfortunate.”

So far, 350 runners are registered online and Curley predicts another 75 or so will register on race day.

The town of Pictou will be assisting the run, doing a sweep of the Jitney Trail portion of the run in case there are any washouts or debris on the route.

“We’ll make use of pylons, if there is any risk at all to the runners on the route”

If it rains on Sunday, Curley said the committee is ready to water proof sound equipment and electronic gear, just as they did for this year’s John Miles Running Event.
