WESTVILLE – For the Town of Westville, honouring the fallen Moncton Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers was simply something they had to do.

Three red maple trees stand in Acadia Park after a ceremony on Tuesday, serving as a memorial for Const. Doug Larche, Const. Fabrice Gevaudan, and Const. Dave Ross.

“It will be a reminder that they will always be in our hearts and minds,” Mayor Roger MacKay said about the officers who were killed during the Moncton shooting in June. “Hopefully these families will get a chance to come down here to Westville and see the beautiful trees we’ve planted in their memories.”

In good times and bad, it’s important for the RCMP to know they have support, Staff-Sgt. Steve Halliday said Tuesday following the ceremony in Westville.

“This demonstration here by the Town of Westville is just overwhelming, quite frankly. It’s overwhelming for us and words can’t say how much we appreciate what they’ve done for us today,” Halliday said.

Close to three dozen residents, municipal representatives, Westville police officers and RCMP were present as the town unveiled plaques with each officer’s name.

MacKay said they decided to commemorate them out of respect for the officers and their families, noting that though they weren’t from Westville, RCMP officers work closely with many municipal police units including their own.

Halliday said the support RCMP have received over the past five weeks, in this county and beyond, has helped give them strength to continue their work.

“The wounds are deep from a situation like this and it hits all of us pretty hard because we don’t expect these things to happen. We go to work, knowing that they could. You just simply can’t plan for the emotions and the toll that it takes on everyone.”
