A Halifax Regional Police officer was lucky to suffer only minor injuries after he was dragged by a fleeing pick-up truck during a traffic stop in Dartmouth early Thursday morning.

Police say the officer pulled over the driver for speeding at 12:15 a.m. in the area of Portland Street and Eisner Boulevard.
The 22-year-old driver, who the officer learned was unlicensed and uninsured, suddenly started up his truck and tried putting it into a gear.
That’s when the officer tried to prevent the driver from leaving, and during an altercation, was dragged about 30 feet by the moving truck before he fell to the road.
The officer suffered a minor road rash, then jumped back into his vehicle and chased after the driver. About 15 minutes later, police say the driver and the truck were located on Alberni Lane.
The 22-year-old was arrested without incident and is due in court Thursday on charges of assaulting an police officer, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police.
