Canine sitting pretty for competition in Hungary

Bo isn’t doing bad for a seven-year-old – even in dog years.

Twice he’s made it to the podium of national agility competitions, but his latest trip coming up the end of the month is really something to bark about.

The border collie, owned and handled by Sarah LeBlanc of Pictou County, is going to be travelling to Hungary later this month to represent Canada along with 15 other large dogs carefully selected from among Canada’s top canines.

“We had to submit an application and had to submit some videos,” LeBlanc said.

They as well as two other teams from the Maritimes were selected. They know the other Maritimers, so are looking forward to having some familiar travelling companions.

The trip will cost a lot, but LeBlanc said they’ve had great community support. The Doggy Day Care in Truro held a raffle on a cake and LeBlanc has sold dog treats as a fundraiser.

The competition known as the European Open is one of several world events in dog agility. The way it works is a dog is prompted to go through a set course. They are judged on speed and performance.

To be top of their game, Bo and LeBlanc train daily. They had a bit of a bump on the road this year however.

“One of the things that was hard on us was after Christmas he developed an injury,” she said.

For an unknown reason he began limping. LeBlanc knows that Bo gives 150 per cent every time he enters a competition and knew he would force himself despite injury if she allowed him. She was at the point of quitting competition to spare her friend any unnecessary pain, but found a chiropractor who has been able to restore Bo back to top condition again.

“Luckily we got him back and he’s healthy.”

This will be the first time for either of the pair to have gone to Hungary.

“We’re pretty keen on that,” she said. “We’re going to make a little trip of it and do some sightseeing.”
