Don’t be alarmed if you see boats and helicopters off the coast today. It’s just for training.

The Canadian Coast Guard is leading a large-scale search and rescue exercise in the eastern Northumberland Strait today. The exercise will take place in the waters between Pictou and Wood Islands from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In the opening scenario Sydney CCG Radio informs the Simulated JRCC Halifax about a “broken Mayday Message” transmitted on marine VHF Ch.16. The vessel is believed to be a tour boat taking on water with 20 people. The words “Point Prim” and “Caribou” are readable during the transmission. Sydney CCG Radio will be unable to establish communication with the vessel calling “Mayday.”
