Trans Canada Trail film crew capture young community spirit

TRENTON - Many hands make light work.

A day of trail building went by faster than expected, due to a large group of young volunteers offering their able bodies. Approximately 30 people helped pack down the latest section of the Trans Canada Trail in Pictou County on Saturday. AMANDA JESS – THE NEWS

It’s a cliché, but it rang true in Trenton on Saturday.

Half a day was allotted to build half a kilometer of the Trans Canada Trail on Trenton Park lands, but the project was half finished after only an hour of work.

That’s because approximately 30 under-30s showed up to help.

“That’s the power of the collective,” trails coordinator for Active Pictou County Sally O’Neill said.

It was the youngest group Copequid Trail Consulting, the trail development organization who prepared the portion of the forest, has had during a project. Part of that can be attributed to Pulse Pictou County’s involvement.

The recently formed group for young working-age individuals gathered a small, but mighty crew of helpers together to pack down 45 tonnes of gravel.

One of their focuses is community, making the partnership a perfect one.

“I can see us participating in trail building for future events because this is going well,” one of the founders, Amanda Hill, said.

O’Neill suggested it was beneficial for those involved, citing an opportunity for leadership.

“It means something to the community and has a direct, immediate impact you can see.”

The success of the last Trans Canada Trail project in Pictou County prompted TCT to send a cameraman this time to gather footage for promotional use on their website and in presentations.

O’Neill said TCT had been impressed last year with the amount of youth involved, though there’s no secret to how they did it.

“The way we got so many youth involved is we asked them,” she said.

The project involved many community organizations, including the Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps, who have been helping with other trail projects throughout the county.
