The New Glasgow Academy Campaign has officially surpassed $150,000 and is quickly nearing the $200,000 commitment.

Painting has started on the exterior of New Glasgow Academy. The P-8 school is scheduled to open this September.

“We’re getting there. There is light at the end of the tunnel,” says co chair Dave Whittemore.

He said he has a few corporate commitments he’s waiting to get confirmation on which will bring them closer and are trusting in the community to help them reach their goal.

The money will go towards enhancements at the school.

In addition to the corporate donations, he said they also had good success with their Chase the Ace fundraiser which brought in about $8,000 for the fundraiser. The game was starting to gain momentum when the Ace was drawn which was unfortunate, but overall it was a great success.

There’s a few more fundraisers in the works including a lob ball tournament from Aug. 15-17 at the Bullpen in Stellarton. Anyone interested can contact Vernon Earl at 902-921-4054 or by email at vernon_earle@hotmail.com. They are also planning another fundraising event on Oct. 4 with Highland Ford which donates a certain amount of money based on the number of test drives people can get for their school.

Construction of the school is expected to be completed in time to open in September. Currently, workers have began painting the exterior. Each wing is going to be painted a different colour.

When the school is complete, it’s going to include some unique features honouring the past including benches made from the stairway treads of New Glasgow Junior High (Previously New Glasgow High).

Enhancements for New Glasgow Academy will include:

- Increasing the size of the Gymnasium by 900 square feet to provide accommodation for two physical education classes to be held simultaneously and include seating for 200.

- Expanding the band and elementary music rooms by 300 square feet to improve the acoustic quality, provide separate practice areas and storage space for instruments and equipment.

- Adding 225 square feet to the multicultural meeting room to allow more space for activities

- Natural outdoor recreation area

- New musical instruments

- Sports uniforms

- Art projects, students will be given the opportunity to participate and create various art projects to be displayed throughout the school

- A 20 foot totem pole depicting the history of the 3 schools and the community’s multiculturalism
